The Art of Batik: From Plain Fabric to Wearable Art

At GRACIA, Batik is more than a colourful fabric. It is a creative process in which ideas, patterns and colour are brought together to produce textiles with their own character. The process begins with fabric and a design concept. Patterns are carefully created before colour is introduced to produce the distinctive appearance associated with Batik. Because of the nature of the process, variations can occur across the fabric. These differences help give each piece its individual character.

Our work does not necessarily end when the Batik fabric is completed. The fabric can become the starting point for a completely new garment. Depending on the customer's preference and design, Batik can be transformed into dresses, shirts, trousers, jackets and other custom-made pieces. This allows us to connect textile creation with garment making—from the development of the fabric to the finished piece worn by the customer.

A Batik fabric takes on a completely different identity when it is cut, sewn and shaped into a garment. Good garment construction considers the placement of patterns, the structure of the design and how the finished piece will sit on the wearer.
